Problems opening Windows Explorer in XP Home

I am currently trying to help my friend with his HP Pavilion zt1145 laptop. His machine will experience a fatal error every time he tries to use anything that windows explorer operates. For example I wanted to give you a more complete list of features so I opened up Control Panel to view them just now and it experienced a fatal error and had to close windows explorer so I was not able to view the system information in detail. It has been affecting every aspect of the machine and so I was wandering if I should try to back stuff up and use the system restore disk to send the notebook back to the way it came out of the box? Or is there something else that can be done? Has anyone heard of this happening recently? Thanks

System rostore or reinstall OS. I would recommend reinstalling OS, as there may have been problems during the oringal install that is now surfacing.
