Problems Joining a Domain

I'm using Windows XP Pro. The domain controllers are OS X servers. When I try to join the domain I get the error:

The following error occurred attempting to join the domain "DN":

The specified domain either does not exist or could not be contacted.

There is a backup domain controller on the same network as the computer I'm joining from. The primary domain controller is on a different subnet. If I stop the local backup domain controller I get the error message as soon as I try to join the domain. If the backup domain controller is running I get a login prompt, a delay, and then I get the error.

I know nothing of OSX server. Does it run LDAP? And does it support windows clients?
I had never touched one before I started working here. I actually like it a lot; Workgroup Manager + Server Admin + Bash Shell make a very nice platform.
It runs an LDAP implementation called Open Directory.
