I'm having problems installing windows XP. I keep getting a boot configuration error. I have previously installed the trial version of XP on this machine with no problems except for it expiring. I wiped the drive clean before the installation. The motherboard I'm using is a Gigabyte GA-7VAXP, I have flashed the BIOS to the most current version. I have tried disabling all of the integrated peripherals. Anyone have any ideas, as Gigabyte has not responded to my plea for help.

Definitelt do the FDISK /MBR. But if that doesn't work...

Go into the BIOS.

Load FAIL SAFE

Load Optimized Defaults

Save BIOS and EXIT.

Once you do that, I indeed would wipe the drive and try the install. If you use just format to "wipe" the drive, make sure and use:

FORMAT C: /U

That's unconditional and it's the closest thing next to a low level format. If you have the low level utilities, you might want to do that instead.

I see that your board has an on-board RAID controller. Have you been pressing F6 when asked during the installation? It only flashes on the bottom of the screen for maybe 10 seconds. You will need to load the Promise drivers, on floppy, to allow WinXP access to the hard drives.

The installation will usually error out if you do not do this first.

If you turn off the Promise RAID controller in the BIOS, then only use the standard IDE connectors, you can skip this step.
