I've ust bought a vertex 2 50gb ssd and have formatted it with diskmgmt.msc but every time I try and boot from windows 7 cd and instal windows 7 onto ssd I get error message DISK BOOT FAILURE INSERT SYSTEM DISK AND PRESS ENTER. I have no idea why as I've set boot priority to boot from cd in bios (gigabyte x58 UD5). I can install games into drive when in windows (using a previous installation on another mech hdd).
Its my first SSD what am I doing wrong?

You may be booting from the wrong drive. Disconnect all HDDs and connect the SSD to port 1 on your motherboard SATA ports.

Now enter System BIOS (hitting del on the keyboard) and look for AHCI option such as "Serial ATA mode" or "RAID mode"; it has to be set to AHCI! Some motherboards call this "Native SATA".

Now that you've got your SSD in AHCI mode, install windows 7 to it; insert windows 7 dvd and boot from the dvd to launch setup/install process. Now it should detect your SSD; delete all partitions and create a new one. You can choose to make the partition smaller than the full capacity to dedicate more space to the SSD internally, to make it faster.

So either create a partition with the full capacity or create a smaller partition like 40GB.

If you get that error message again after connecting your other HDDs then check the Boot Sequence order in the System BIOS. It has to boot from your SSD first (or the CDROM then SSD).

I have that same problem with my older Vertex drive. If I leave the Win7 disc in the tray it will ask to boot off the CD, I choose not to, then it loads Windows fine. Without the disc on the tray I get the same DISK BOOT FAILURE INSERT SYSTEM DISK AND PRESS ENTER error.

I could probably mess around in BIOS to fix it but keeping the Win7 disc in is the lazy solution.

Is your bios recognizing the ssd? once it is installed?

Shot in the dark - some motherboards have two options for booting from CD/DVD. One is a generic "Boot from CD/DVD" option, and the other is the actual DVD drive. For example, in my ASUS BIOS, I have to actually pick the name of the DVD drive, which is something like "PIONEER DVR-216D xxxxx".

It sounds like, despite your settings, it's not booting off the DVD but going directly to the hard drive first, and finding no Windows version on there.

Installed! it was bios change from IDE to AHCI so windows would/could manage/detect ssd to install to. Thanks anyway
