My friend is having problems when trying to installing windows 2000, it crashes during auto hardware detection (e.g. mouse, keyboard) It processes half way then crashes leaving a black screen full of commas (auto detection towards the end of setup), Anyone got any ideas. Thanks!

His spec:-

AMD Athalon 600
196MB RAM (Kingston, PC100)
20 GIG HARD DISK
SOUNBLASTER 128 PCI
ATI RAGE EXPERT 2000
EPSON STYLUS 440
HP SCANJET 3300C
HP CD WRITER PLUS 8200
FIC SD11 MOTHERBOARD
CONEXANT HFC V90 VOICE FAX MODEM (FORMALLY ROCKWELL)

Pull out all of your components (except vid card) and install. If it successfully installs, then add each component one at a time, rebooting between each component and installing drivers for it. This is easiest way to narrow down which components may be causing problems.

I agree with Heretik. Getting it running is the first priority. Also, when you add device drivers from there on out make sure you have the latest ones. That could cut down on aggrivations.

Yes, I was going to say it is probably one of your devices that it doesn't like.
Installing with bare essentials then adding each device is the safe way to go.
