Problems installing retail P-D HSF on Motherboard (long distance)

I'm helping a friend over the phone setup his new computer, he's never done it before. He's got a Pentium D 930 and an Intel BOXD955XCSLKR motherboard located here:

http://www.zipzoomfly.com/jsp/ProductDe...ctCode=240949il.jsp?ProductCode=240949

I've walked him through installing the CPU and had him read the instructions, look for mounting brackets, but he insists that this retail processor hsf does not line up with the motherboard.

He claims that the holes are square (HSF needs circular holes) and aligned around the socket in such a way where it is impossible to line them up correctly.

Has anyone had any experience with this that could help him out with? I'm guessing he either is missing something simple or he has the wrong motherboard.

His packaging instructions state the correct motherboard, but his motherboard box says a product name that is shorter than the one on zzfly.com: BOXD955XCS instead of BOXD955XCSLKR. I don't know if this makes any difference.

Help is greatly appreciated, thank you!

That is a BTX motherboard. It requires a special case, and requires a special heatsink. Most likely he has a normal retail CPU with an ATX style heatsink. Was he intentionaly getting a BTX motherboard?

Yeah he intentionally got that motherboard because his brother told him to over my advice. I didn't know that there would be a problem with that though. I didn't even know that BTX existed.

Very helpful to know, thank you. He has an ATX case and also a normal retail CPU w/ ATX heatsink probably.

I'll let him know that he probably needs a new motherboard, or, a new case, processor fan.

There are some rare cases that can use both BTX and ATX motherboards, but it's unlikely he has one of those. So yeah, he will either need to get a new case, and BTX heatsink, or an ATX motherboard.
