Hey guys... help me out...

I bought a new maxtor 40GB hd to replace my current 20gb (which i will keep as a backup). I am running WinXP and have NTFS system on the old 20gb.

With the installation software maxblast I cannot backup a NTFS HD. I also cannot go back to a FAT32 file system either...
What is the best way to do this replacement?

I currently have the 40 GB installed and formatted as a secondary drive but i dont have anything backed up; I am not sure how to proceed... the maxtor website is worthless...

Get Norton Ghost 2002 and image it from the old to the new. Worked for me many times.

Yes you can, I just did it last week using Maxblast2 plus which I downloaded from Maxtor's website to move my XP(NTFS formatted) system on my 40gb Maxtor D740X to my new WD 8Ogb S.E. drive. Perhaps you forgot to set the jumpers on one drive to master with slave present and the other to slave?Or you are using older Maxblast software? That's all I can think could be wrong as all I did was set the 40gb Maxtor to master with slave present and the WD to slave and boot using the Maxblast2 plus floppy boot disc I made. It's such an easy utility to use my ghost rarely is used.

i think the problem i had was that my cd-rom wasn't recognized with the floppy bootup... I downloaded the 6 disk XP floppy bootup from the MSFT website but for some reason it doesnt work with the maxblast2plus ver 1.3 floppy disk...

I will try the ghost software...

why would you need a CD-ROM drive to copy the contents of one HDD to another? you just make the new one slave, The one your backing up master and boot from the floppy then follow directions and bing, bam, boom, you are making an exact copy of your HDD ;)
