problems installing metacity wm in fc3

hey guys, when i run the 'configure' file for metacity WM i get this error:

configure:9348: error: Library requirements (gtk+-2.0 >= 2.0.0) not met; consider adjusting the PKG_CONFIG_PATH environment variable if your libraries are in a nonstandard prefix so pkg-config can find them.

i used yum to install gtk+ but it's still not working and i can't 'whereis' it either. anybody know what's wrong?
