I am running windows XP professional edition. Computer is 1.4 Ghz Athlon, All in wonder radeon 8500, SB Audigy, 640 RAM, Asus DVD ROM E612. I hope this is enough info for the problem, but we'll see...
Anyways, I have several things Ive tried to install (Half Life, the sims, Palm software, just to name a few). I'll insert the cd, the autorun program will run, and I will choose the option to install the program (some have different options). The autorun window will close, and then nothing. If I open task manager, it will have setup.exe and wowexec.exe running, but with no memory usage. I tried installing Half Life on a friends comp, also running XP pro, and it started the installation fine. Whats going on? I cant anyone else with this problem. Can someone help me please? As you can see, its a variety of programs, so I dont know whats going on. I have installed all the windows updates, and this problem happens even if I manually open the setup/install file (and not just let autoplay run). I have been able install Office 2000 and some other programs without any problem.
This was the original post. Here is a new question/info. I searched the microsoft website for some info, and found this problem for win 2k I think. The solution was to go into the registry, and navigate to the WOW folder, and print the KnownDLLs. Then search the system32 folder for there dlls. If any are missing, replace them off the install cd. I did this, and found that the "rasapi16.dll" file was in the registy list and not in the folder. Going along with the directions for 2k, i tried to install it from the windows XP cd, but it wasnt on the cd. The file rasapi32.dll was, but not rasapi16.dll. Now, could this be the reason i can't install programs that use a 16 bit setup file, and if so, where can I get a current rasapi16.dll file. I copied one off a win 98 cd, but that didnt solve the problem. Any other direction or information would help a lot. Thanks
