Hi chaps, I recently acquired a Radeon VE for testing purposes and I thought I'd take it for a spin on my machine. The problem is, I can't install the damn thing.

If I allow Windows XP to detect the card and install drivers, when I reboot it freezes with a garbled screen and the only way I can get back in is with safe mode.

If I install either the latest official (6.13.10.6015) or the alternate (6.13.10.6025) drivers from ATi the installer has a "severe error: the video adapter is not compatible with the drivers you are installiing" error, despite the fact that the card is being recognised by both Windows XP and the detection utility that comes with ATi's CD installer.

I checked ATi's FAQ and the only thing resembling this issue is installing a Radeon SDR on Windows 2000 and getting the same "drivers do not match hardware" error, and the solution is to get newer Windows 2000 drivers. Since I've already tried the only two Windows XP drivers available I really have nowhere else to go. The driver CD is useless since it doesn't have Windows XP drivers on it.

I've correctly removed all traces of my nVidia card and I have the latest BIOS and chipset drivers (VIA 437s) for my motherboard and I'm not overclocking anything. I've also tried changing the various AGP settings in the BIOS to no avail, and I've also tried lower resolutions and refresh rates. I've also tried connecting the monitor to the other VGA port on the card.

Does anyone have any suggestions how to fix this?

Note: the installation of this ATi card marks the first time ever that I've installed new hardware on any machine and had Windows freeze when booting. If it's really the fault of the hardware I'm extremely disappointed in ATi. Hopefully though it's just a configuration issue so I'll be able to solve it with your help.

Come on, somebody must have had some problems installing Radeon cards under Windows XP. Have any of you seen something similar to my problem? What did you do to solve it?

I didn't want to bump this but I only posted it yesterday and it's already on the third page.

And to make matters worse, it seems Rage3D has been down since I got the card. I wonder if someone is trying to tell me something. ;)
