problems getting Winamp to play audio CDs...HELP!

as you all know, the more recent versions of Winamp have been programmed to play audio CDs. well my winamp just wont play them...i have tried almost everything in the book (i say ALMOST everything b/c i'm hoping that there is something i havent tried that will work). i optimized it for audio CD during installation, i've reinstalled to make sure there werent any problems, i even downloaded another install file from winamp.com to make sure the one i had wasnt corrupted or something. anyways, the same thing happens every time. i check of the Audio CD check box, but when i go back to the options later it is unchecked. it wont stay checked. i cannot for the life of me firgure out why winamp wont play audio CDs (on which music is in .CDA format). please help!

3 questions...

Do you have more that one cd in your system(like a burner and a reader)? If so, winamp has problems with multiple cdroms on one system

Do you have the audio card connected to the CDrom drive?

Will your PC play CDs using any other program?

1) i have no other CD drives...just an NEC CD-ROM
2) yes the CD-ROM is connected to the sound card
3) yes the CD will play through Windows CD Player and other audio programs...i'm pretty sure the problem is with Winamp.

What model of NEC CDRom is it?

Here is what i have set up in winamp under setup/file types...

Associated extensions: Selected all
Associate with audio cds: checked
Register types on Winamp start: checked
Enrique as default action: unchecked
Directoty contex menus: checked

and under setup/agent I have....

enable winamp agent: unchecked
Show system icon in tray: checked
maintain file associations: checked

Hope this helps...

as you can see my setup is the same as yours except for "show icon in system tray." i like to have as few things as possible in my systray. like i said in my original post. i put a check in the "Associate with audio cds" box, but when i switch to another sub-menu, or close the options menu and reopen it, the box is unchecked. it wont stay checked. i dont know off the top of my head what model NEC CD-ROM i have, but i do know that i havent always had this problem, so i have reason to believe that its not the CD-ROM causing problems. i'll get back to you asap about the CD-ROM model.
