Problems entering bios (1600xp, Epox 8KHA+)

Well after building this computer I start it up for the first time. Seems fine, detects memory and auto detects processor. After it displays the processor speed, it stops. Just sits there.

As soon as I turn on the computer, the lights on the keyboard go and I can click caps/scroll/num lock and see them light up.

After getting stuck at the processor speed I push delete (to get into bios) nothing happens, and clicking caps/scroll/num no longer lights up.

I'm using an Epox 8KHA+ board, so it has the LED numbers that display problems, its showing 6b which means the cpu was autodetected, no help there.

I thought the ram might have responsible, so I tried variations of placement and even just using one, nothing changes.

Anyone know what the problem could be?

Couple of questions for you. What bios version are you using? Have you tried resetting the bios? Have you tried holding down the INSERT key during initial startup? Holding down the insert key should let you bypass any "bad" bios settings and let you boot up far enough to get into your bios. Once there, load the bios default settings and reboot. If you can successfully boot after doing that, then you can try different bios settings if that's your intention.

Well they were all factory settings, I recieved the board brand new, sealed. I tried it again and it lead me to believe something else was the problem. I powered it on, and it was detecting stuff and allowed me to get into the bios! It wasn't picking up on my HD though, so I would have to go back and check it's connections. After doing so, I started the computer and found the same result at before, stops after displaying the speed. Pretty aggrivating stuff, just when I thought things were turning around. I tried holding the insert key as you mentioned, but it won't respond. Nothing will once it locks up after displaying speed, the keyboard lights go out. So I'm thinking it might be a faulty power supply, but I can't tell because I have no other ATX's around. Anyone know what else I can try?

You do have the jumper on the board set at 133mhz for your 1600+,I would try the board out of the case and with minimal setup and make sure the cpu is fully seated in the socket try clearing the CMOS for a longer time.

doublecheck the jumpers.

never trust a factory jumpered board, ALWAYS read the manual and CHECK all the jumpers, first.

Sounds like you haven't done your all your homework yet.

I read the manual and set the jumpers accordingly, so I did my homework. No dice, though. I guess I'll try resetting the CMOS longer as suggested, if nothing else works...RMA.
