Problems converting AVI to VCD

Hi all,

I dl'ed a few movie trailers and want to burn them to a VCD so that I can enjoy them on my DVD player.

The files are all AVI. The file appears to be a TMD file. I downloaded a trial version of TMPGEnc Plus 2.5 to convert to VCD (for some reason the freeware version wasn't recognized by Winzip as a valid archive).

Anyway everytime I try to convert the videosource to VCD it crashes once it reaches 5-7%. This has happened 3 separate times. What am I doing wrong here?

I also tried to burn directly to the CD using Nero's VCD mode and the disk that it burns isn't recognized by my DVD player.

Any advice?

Running: Win2K Pro SP2; Matrox G400 Video card (Matrox powerdesk 6.71), Nimo codecs v50 build7, Windows Media Player 7.1

Viper:

Yes my dvd player can play VCDs (but not SVCDs)

Also I forgot tomention that I have the latest DirectX 9.0

What is your system/hardware spec? With respect to the crashing problem, one of the possibilities is overheating. When encoding a video file, your cpu is at near 100% making the cpu really hot. If you don't have adequate cooling for your system, it will crash. However, if you're able to play any 3D games for hours then I would rule out the overheating problem as one of the possibilities.

I suggest you go visit Here for any help on encoding a vcd/dvd/svcd/xvcd..etc. TMPGEnc is not the easiest to run, so I would try other variations available at the link posted.

Try the nero VCD burning app, very easy to use. Just point it to the AVI file, click on "Burn" and go away. It will convert if need be, and then burn.

Thanks for the suggestions:

1) It is not a heating problem. I have artic silver + 4 fans. The case temps are excellent. I can run 3d apps for hours without a problem.

2) I tried Nero's VCD mode to burn directly from AVI. Nero wasn't able to burn the file for some reason. It would complete the process but the CD that it produces is unreadable by my DVD player and my computer.

Thinking that the DIVX file was somehow corrupted during the download, I tried to repair the file using DivxFix and VirtualDub. When trying to repair the file using VIrtual dub, the dang program crashed too!

Any other suggestions? I can play the file fine using WMP 7.1 on my computer but for some reason it doesn't want to be converted to VCD.

Did you use Nero Express? That is the app that will convert your video into the appropriate MPEG1. I don't think regular nero can do this.
