Problems Connecting

Some specs first

OS Vista 64 SP1 (Part of the problem)
Router WRTP54G
Connection to router is wired

I recently moved back home from school for the summer. This PC has been connected to this router before several times and everything worked fine although sometimes the PC or router needed to be restarted to get everything moving, but once that was done once everything worked fine for months at a time.

Now last night I hooked up the PC to the router and I've tried doing about 25 PC and router reboots. The PC gets an IP from the router about 30% of the time but I can not go into the outside world. The only page I can access is the router config page. Everything times out instantly. All the network setting pages on the PC always say "local Only" The other PC on the network is just fine and running XP.

I have tried resetting the router to factory defaults.
The router firmware is 5.something which seems to be the most up to date.
I am posting this from the Vista box while booted off of a ultimate boot CD made to resemble XP. So obviously, to me at least, it has something to do with Vista.

Can someone please help me or at least point in in the right direction. I don't want to be using a boot CD or deal with the hassle of reformatting just to use the internet for a few weeks.

Quick update:

I tried the manaual IP last night and got the same oucome. "Local Only".

I am posting this from within Vista plugged straight into the modem so I'm guessing that something in Vista is not working properly with something within the router.

Could be, or there could be a problem with the router. Are you at the latest firmware? Have you tried resetting the router to factory defaults?

Well, if it's the router and a replacement fixes it...then all you need to know is the router went faulty somehow. How exactly? I wouldn't worry to much, it happens. I'm curious though, when you can connect to the router...what does the WAN config report?

Do you have the lastest NIC drivers? For my NIC there have been quite a few new driver updates through Windows Update.

I have a Linksys WRT54G with Vista and sometimes my PC says local only but I'm still able to still get out to the net. Did your school use a proxy? Perhaps you need to remove it from your browswer. When you log into your router web interface, does the router receive a WAN address? Also try pinging a site from the command prompt.

I would even try calling Linksys about it. This might be a common issue with this model and they may have a fix for it.
