Hello everyone!!

I have a few questions for you guys. Yesterday I bought a Toshiba 37av502 TV from Circuit City. The TV has HDMI, VGA and component video. It's connected to my Comcast cablebox via HMDI and that part works fine.

I also have a nearby computer with an EVGA 8800gtx video card with two DVI outputs and S-video. One DVI is connected to my monitor.

Without thinking I tried to connect the second DVI port to the TV using a DVI->VGA adapter. the computer was powered down during the hookup. But when I booted the PC, it started to boot and then when it got to the 'loading Windows' screen, the PC when black. After some fiddling and swapping components, I realized the motherboard had died.

I forked out another $200 for a new mobo and the 8800gtx (and all other components) still works fine.

Question 1) Did I do something wrong? I don't want to repeat yesterday! Several people I've spoken to say it must have been a coincidence. If anything would have failed it would have been the 8800gtx, NOT the mobo.

Question 2) Can I safely hook up the TV via DVI->VGA and have the monitor run on the other DVI port at the same time? (I think "yes" but I want to be sure) Or do I HAVE to use the S-video connection?

Thanks ahead of time.

EDIT:
Question 3) I could also connect DVI->HMDI wiith the right cable, couldn't I? Would that be better?

TV's usually have a resolution limit imparted on VGA connections. Also note in the spec for vga 1080p/i isn't exactly in there.

I assume you tested your board on a pc monitor to see if its alive. Hooking up a wire to your video card to tv CANT possibly kill your mobo or video card. Why didn't you use warranty on your board?

DVI -> HDMI will work fine assuming you aren't doing something else wrong here.

BassBomb said it.

BTW, many Toshiba TVs will only accept limited resolutions over VGA. For example, mine only accepts 1024x768 or less.

Its the same with most tv's in fact, some instead are limited to 1280x720

The mobo was out of warranty, thats why I got a new one. The 8800gtx definitely still works just fine. The Tv manual says it accepts WXGA through the VGA connector, that's probably in the 1280x720 ballpark. But via the HDMI connector it accepts 720p or 1080i, so I will probably get a DVI-to-HDMI cable and do that.

I just didn't want a repeat performance of a dead mobo. No, idea how it happened, it must have just been bad luck.

Might have just been something else that only became apparent coincidentally wwhen you tried that

I use HDMI-DVI
