I got this dual layer burner last year, and finally just got some name brand, memorex 16x media. right at the the top of the spindle is says "you may need to update your firmware" and sure enough I did.. so I got the latest from LG and updated the drive with no issues. I then fired up nero 7 and tried burning.. got a coaster.. tried again but did the speed simulation first.. system is plenty fast.. but the burn failed again. then i tried with alcohol 120%, failed at 16x..
finally, i updated nero 7 to 7.0.1.4, and just burned a 16x successfully. however, just before the drive actually starts to burn it f**ks around for about 2.5 minutes.. just spinning up and down, and clicking.. then it actually burns, but by now its taken as long to burn at 16x as it does at 8x... so im wondering what the problem might be?

Specs: Athlon Barton 2700+, 1gig pc3200, dvd drive is on ide channel 2, its master and only drive on chain. data is being read from 120gig ata 133 8meg drive on ide1, its master and only on that chain. i've also tried from my 36gig raptor sata 10k drive. running XPSP2.

Memorex wouldn't be my choice of media. To make sure it's your DVD drive at fault i'd get a few verbatims or better yet TYs. I don't know about memorex in particualr, although i've got some sat round downstairs (never let your dad buy media). But the best stuff is the TY followed by verbs, ritec do some good discs i think, but i found verbs and i've stuck with them.

Look here for a guide to which discs to buy:

The simple answer is to burn at 12x, i know on my old rig i don't always burn at 16x (no coasters though) and the specs are similar to yours.

The drive still screws around for two minutes before burning at 12x.. so it actually takes longer to burn at 12x then at 8x.

Any other suggestions? Just try different media?
