Problems binding extra Logitech MX700 buttons in Half-Life

Has anyone here tried to bind the extra buttons on the Logitech MX700 in HL? I've tried a lot of different things:

1. Did not install Logitech Mouseware. The only buttons on the MX700 (other than the obvious left and right click buttons) that would work were the wheel, the smaller thumb button which showed up in the HL console as "mouse5", and the two "cruise" buttons which did the same thing as the mouse wheel.

2. Did install Logitech Mouseware 9.73. I really wanted to use the larger thumb button, so I did what I always did with Mouseware and my older Logitech Mouseman Wheel and bound the larger thumb button to "middle mouse". Bingo, the larger thumb button would work in HL. The smaller mouse button ceased to function, and the cruise and application switch buttons royally screw up HL because they put those graphics on your cursor when you press them, which causes HL to have cursor problems and other things too.

What I really want to do is have BOTH thumb buttons work in HL. The default MS drivers would allow the smaller button to work, whilst Mouseware allows a key to be bound to "middle button", which makes a button of your choice work in HL. Binding both thumb buttons to "middle button" is pointless because then you can't have them do different things in HL.

So, my next step was to bind the smaller thumb button to a function key. I tried F12 and Page Down. The keys would function as programmed in Windows, but I'll be damned if they would work in HL! I set up my config to have F12 do a command in HL, and it would only work if I pressed the actual keyboard F12, and not the programmed mouse button. WTF is going on here? I know Logitech is supposed to be releasing better drivers soon that should help gamers, but I'm wondering if anyone here has succeeded at making these buttons work?

i think i heard somewhere to solve the problem was to install the logitech driver from the cd using the windows' install program, but without the mouseware. not positive though.

That's actually something I did as well. If you don't install any software at all with the MX700, you won't get the extra buttons doing their thing (other than the smaller thumb button as described above), nor will you get the 800dpi resolution. If you go to device manager and update your mouse driver by searching the Logitech CD, your dpi gets boosted from 400 to 800. This still doesn't do anything with button binding though.

After some more testing, I've also found that the Half-Life config screen will recognize extra buttons bound to functions. If I bind one of the thumb buttons to F12 in Mouseware, the HL control config screen will pick it right up when I press it. But as soon as I go in-game, it still doesn't work...

A possible workaround:

This trick has worked for a few different mice for me (Razor, MS):
Bind the button to emulate a key and then go into HL and bind that key to what you want.

That's the first thing I did. My problem is that that doesn't work.
