Problems after installing Win XP

I recently did a fresh install of Windows XP after reformatting my hard drive, and now the computer is having problems upon startup. The first few instances, the computer wouldn't recognize the mouse or keyboard, but would boot up fine. Now it won't even get that far. I now get a CMOS/checksum error, and the keyboard or mouse still isn't recognized, so I can't access the BIOS even if I wanted to. (Not even sure that is what I need to do.)

Specs: AMD 1300
Western Digital 60 gig HD
ASUS A7N266 motherboard
512 MB Crucial DDR

Any help would be much appreciated. Oh, and if it makes any difference, I plugged my hard drive into another computer and it works fine.

Thanks in advance.

What brand, model, wattage and age is your power supply? Also check that your didn't accidentally plug the keyboard into the mouse port or vice versa.

bonus question: how old is the CMOS battery? Maybe go get another one if it's the original, they're only a couple dollars.

The power supply is an Antec 300W. If I recall correctly, it is about 2-2.5 years old. Thank you for the suggestion about the CMOS battery. I will try replacing that today.

Unfortunately, replacing the CMOS battery didn't do the trick. Now the computer isn't even sending any kind of signal to the monitor. The fans turn on, but the computer still doesn't boot up.

Any insight would be much appreciated. Thanks!

If you happen to have another high-quality power supply you could test with, I'd do that next. Maybe the ol' Antec is failing.
