New ABIT BD7-RAID with 256 PC2100 installed just fine. Fresh install on new HD, Win98SE all fine still. I installed video card drivers, all is still fine. Looks great, fast boot ..etc...
Now I install the i845 chipset drivers for the motherboard and it reboots and then it says I have a video problem. I hit reset and it boots in safe mode! I go into "system properties" and it says C is in msdos incompatibility mode, Im guessing it's a driver conflict. but why ??? Also it shows me 2 cdroms ... This is really confusing me. I'm only a novice and I've seen it before and someone said go into msconfig and uncheck something or make it not load all drivers ...etc...
I hate having to do stuff like that when it's a fresh install. It might be different if it happens after I've loaded everthing I own on it. :(

I seem to remember reading something about Intel no longer supporting Win98 (or Win98se) in the latest version of the drivers... but I'm not sure. Let's see what others say.

BD-7 supports Win98, Win2000, WinXP with no problems.

However, I installed a new board, and had at the beginning the same problem. What it means is that the 845 drivers are not really installed on your system, thus most hardware will not work correctly because there is no correct IDE, and Video channels.

Start in safe mode, (ignore what you see in the properties there), install the DOS drivers for the CD-ROM.

Config.sys should include the line.

DEVICEHIGH=ATAPI_CD.SYS /D:MSCD000 /P:170,15

Autoexec.bat should include:

C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND\MSCDEX.EXE /D:MSCD000 /V /M:10

This will insure that the system can read from CD ROM.

While in safe mode change the Video Mode to the MS standard PCI VGA.

Make sure that you have the original Win98 CD-ROM, and restart.

The system probably will start to detect the new hardware and install it. If not go to New Hardware and force it to detect.

Once the CD-ROM is recognized correctly, you can erase the DOS drivers from the two files mentioned above.

The Video drivers should be configured at the end when every thing else is working.

I always install chipset drivers before any video, soundcard, etc drivers. Give that a shot.
