Problematic Laptop Brands?

Hey Everyone!
I am in the market for a laptop, and I did a lot of looking around and for the price range I was looking at the Compaq Presario fit what I wanted in a laptop with my pricerange. I have a friend who swears by Dell, but I don't really know if I want to shell out 300 more for a laptop of the same power from them.

I wanted to know what kind of problems you all have had with Compaq laptops and if it is really worth the 300 or so more.
