when trying to install the video card driver on my friends computer the computer locks up and we have to restart. we've used the drivers off the cd and the updated ones from nvidia.

Setup
epox 8k3ae
gainward ti4200 650xp

just need some suggestions on what to do. thnx

Howdy,

First, if you are running Win2k, make sure you have the latest version of DirectX installed. Whatever OS you're runing, make sure you completely remove the older drivers using add/remove programs and delete all the install files from folder that the nvidia diver installer expands to. Restart your machine and install the latest drivers from the Nvidia website. If you are still having problems look for a program (dont remember the name) to remove the Nvidia drivers from your system and try the install again.

Hopes this helps.

in running winxp with sp1 right now

when i go to add/remove programs there are no drivers there, i deleted the nvidia folder and when i go to install the new drivers, it still says that there is drivers.

when im in control panel though, nvidia nview desktop is still there with some dll's

they are

nvshell.dll
dmcpl.exe
nwiz.exe
nvtuicpl.cpl
iexplore.exe

which of these (besides iexplore.exe) should i get rid of?

ok, i unistalled the drivers and it installed the nvidia drivers just fine and then asked to reboot so i did

on the reboot when xp was finding stuff, it found the vga controller, but when it comes to finding the geforce ti4200, it will say its finding it, screen will blink then come back with a small box of the screen and be completely locked

Is your friend overclocking? Make sure he uses more conservative settings if he is. It is a possibility that your friends card is bad.
Is this a new card? or did you only start having these problems when you attempted to install new drivers? You might wanna try running the card in your rig to see if you encounter the same problem.

the video card is somewhat new. his mobo had fried so we rma'd the mobo. got it back and installed everything back in. when we first loaded xp it frooze so we just reinstalled. everything loaded up fine until we tried to install those drivers.

what i don't get though is if the video card is bad, why would it still be somewhat working right now until we try and load in those drivers?

Sounds like something funky in the registry. You can try running a reg cleaner first. If that don't work, you may want to try and do a fresh install.
