Problem with XP and 20" widescreen monitor

Hello

I have an old Dell Optiplex GX150 which used to run XP on a small flat screen monitor (17" maybe). A year ago I wiped it, installed Ubuntu and have been using a Samsung 20" monitor (SM2032 mw) and have had no problems.

I recently decided that I wanted it to be able to dual boot with XP and Ubuntu so I installed XP and all went fine until I tried to boot XP, I get the Windows loading screen but then the screen goes black and I get a small box floating around the screen saying "Not Optimum Mode","Recommended Mode 1680 x 1050 60 Hz".
I can still boot into Ubuntu using the same screen and use it without a problem.

I have done some research into the problem and have come up with two answers:
a) I need to change the resolution through XP, although I don't no how to do this because I cant actually see the screen to log into XP.
b) Its because my video card, or on-board graphics, cant handle a wide screen display.

I would appreciate any help on the matter, either with how I can change the resolution, recommendation of a cheap (<£25/$50) graphics card or a different solution all together.

Thanks

boot to safe mode, change video there?

Ive also had luck when that happens by turning off the display, then turning it back on. probably something to do with it getting confused when switching modes during boot.

VeryCharBroiled, thanks for the reply. I have managed to boot from safe mode and changed the resolution.

Thanks again
