Problem with XP after installing updates

Today, I installed XP updates...
KB925920
KB930178
KB931261
KB931784
KB932168
KB935448
KB935848

After I restarted my computer after the last update, I got an error message to the effect of "a dll was in the space reserved for something else, and it has been removed" Unfortunately, I didnt pay close attention to the message and disregarded it.
A moment after that, my firewall (sygate pf) came up saying NT Kernel 32 has changed since the last time it tried to access the network, and now its trying again, blah. So I assume the removed dll was part of the kernel.
Everything seemed to run smoothly until my network connection failed. Trillian disconnected, Firefox wouldnt load any pages, and there were no ping responses from google. (note I have since ruled out my internet connection/modem/router as a problem - another computer on the network works just fine while my primary one isnt)
At that point, I walked away and locked the workstation. When I did, i got the same error message as before, except this time I noticed the title of the error window said "calc.exe"
After that, I went and did other stuff for about an hour and came back.
I tried to run calculator, and luckily got the error message I got before. Below are the main points in the error message:

Title: calc.exe - Illegal System DLL Relocation
*system DLL user32.dll relocated
*relocation occurred becasue the DLL C:\WINDOWS\system32\SHELL32.dll occupied an address range reserved for Windows system DLL's.

My internet connection was working fine for about 15 minutes after I came back. It hasn't come back since. (that was about 30 mins ago)

Cliffs:
-Installed several XP updates
-DLL's relocated, applications not working as a result
-Internet connection intermittent.

Any help would be appreciated.

installed that - calc still doesnt work, so im assuming its not fixed?

this is really weird
when I turned my computer back on to install this, got the same error message for AVG
seems that another application has DLL's relocated every time i log on or off

grr!
got and installed the update on that page
I do have AVG and the shell pack mentioned, but I installed those over 8 months ago when I got a new hard drive, so I am led to believe that that portion of the support article may not apply to my situation (maybe not...)

I had almost forgotten about this problem...
About a week ago, I was restarting my computer for something, it came back on, got to the point where my motherboard says "verifying DMI pool data..." and then normally starts loading XP. Except this time it said "NTLDR not found press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart"
I was really tired at the time, and just decided to work on it the next day. Well the next day, I turned my computer back on and had no such problem.

Well the same thing just happened again with the NTLDR not found after installing the update mentioned in your [mechbgon] last post

What happens if you try powering the system off completely, then start it again? The missing NTLDR thing may be a red herring here, since that's also a symptom of your motherboard getting  about boot devices. Make sure you don't have any USB drives or memory cards plugged in.

Bigger picture: there's a better free-for-home-users antivirus than AVG (several, actually). You might want to check it out.

bah! side problems (yeah, had my jump drive plugged in by mistake  )
I got the same error message for AVG relocating for shell32.dll

I'll try uninstalling AVG and installing the software you suggested

Ok, so I uninstalled AVG and installed that kapersky AVS you recommended
Obviously, I no longer got the problem with AVG when I start up, but calc still doesnt work - got the same error message as before

as far as I can tell, no other programs are currently affected.
I still seem to be having the problem with my internet, though. Seems to stop working after about 5-10 mins after a restart

Weird. Here's a brainstorm to try:

1) go to Add/Remove Programs, and click the Add/Remove Windows Components at the left

2) uninstall the Accessories that includes Calculator

3) reinstall the Accessories. Did that help at all?

Another idea would be to do a System Restore back to before you did the updates (if possible), uninstall AVG, install Kaspersky or something, then set a System Restore point for someplace to go back to, and do those updates again.

I did, and everything works fine now

thanks for all your help, mechbgon

wow, this is frustrating
My internet connection still goes down after some time and returns promptly after a restart
