Problem with X1950XT?

I just upgraded from an X800XT to a 512mb 1950XT and when I run certain games, small black or white squares dance around my screen. I've tried graphics settings from low to high but nothing gets rid of them.

I thought it might be an issue with the card, but I was able to run World in Conflict on maximum settings without any problems whatsoever. As well, there are no problems with everyday apps.

Any idea whats going on?

My specs:
ASUS M2N-E Mobo
AMD64 X2 5200+
3Gb RAM
Sapphire X1950XT 512Mb
550W PSU
XP Pro, SP2

Use something like ATITool or Rivatuner to check temperatures and see if there's an issue there.

With Atitool, how do I determine whether the temperature is too high?

I tried to find my max core, but after about 1 minute, it started showing artifacts on the little test box. Immediately after I scanned for artifacts and after a few milliseconds my graphics accelerator locked up.

Don't try to find maximum core, because you are overclocking a videocard that is already showing signs of instability. Just run ATI tool and let the cube spin for ten minutes or so until the temperature doesn't fluctuate anymore. That is your maximum temperature. Don't do anything else.

Yeah just open the artifact scanner and let it run for a bit.

You can't see a temperature reading anywhere on ATITool? It should be there in the main screen.

This is all I see

I ran the artifact scanning, at first it went to about 1 minute, showed errors and reset. Then it went to 3 and reset, and now its going past 7 and there haven't been any errors. Does this have any significance?

For some reason, your ATI tool doesn't show you the temperature. Try this version: http://downloads.guru3d.com/download.php?det=725

I think that is probably overheating, but you have errors after just one minute and that is not good. Either the cooler has fallen from the card, or the card is defective. Anyway, try this and tell us what you get.

I tried that version but I didn't see a temperature monitor. I tried an older version as well and it was the same for that. It seems that the temperature graph should be appearing where the big Atitool logo is, but for some reason it isn't happening.

As an update, I can confirm that there are artifacts appearing in World in Conflict after its been running awhile so I suppose it is a cooling problem. Regardless I'll be sending it back for a refund and getting a 9600GT from somewhere else.

Thanks for all the help, you guys rock!
