Problem with X on Laptop

I just installed Mandrake 8.0 on a NEC laptop. When I run KDE or Gnome, the display fonts come out really ugly. When I go into the Mandrake Control Center and check the display properties, the monitor is set as a 'High frequency SVGA 1024x768'. If I change it to 'Generic LCD 1024x768' (which is what the display is) it works fine when I test it. However when I exit the Control Center, the fonts dont change, even if I restart X or reboot the system. When I go back into the Control Center, the display has reverted back to the 'SVGA....' above.
Please help me as this is driving me nuts. This is my first try at installing Linux.
