Problem with Win2K Phone Dialer

I have a new Dell Inspiron 4000 with a 3Com 56K+10/100 mini-PCI card. It's a modem and an ethernet card in one mini-PCI card. If I try to make a call with Phone Dialer, I can dial out, and I can hear what's being said on the other end, but nothing I say goes over the line. I've verified that my microphone works by making a recording with Sound Recorder. I've downloaded the latest drivers for my modem and I've applied every update Microsoft has for Win2K, including service pack 2. Dell's tech support has been useless on this matter...please help! Thanks.

eh, plug your microphone into your modem..that should work--if you dont want to do it that way--get an audio cable and connect your modem and your sound card
