Problem with Win 98SE detecting CDROM

Just upgraded from win 98 to win 98se on my kids computer and now it randomly will not detect the CDROM drive. Did a format c and installed the win 98 se fresh. Any ideas?

The boot disk you used after wiping the drive, was it made from a 98SE machine? To include the self extracting cdrom drivers? Please explain what you did from "A"prompt. We will try to help. What brand CD?

sounds like a loose cable. Is this a scsi or ide cdrom?

The boot disk I used was not from a Win 98 SE machine. It was just a regular Win 98 boot disk. What do I need to do to fix this?

I would try booting up with the startup floppy & using the fdisk /mbr command!

And if that doesn't work, try opening up your computer case and double checking all connections between your CD-Rom and your mtherboard.

boot up & at the A: prompt type fdisk /mbr (note the spacing) then press enter. this executes the command to rewrite your master boot record. reboot & see if its helped or not.

After booting from thd boot disk and then you'll be on the A:\Prompt. Then type Fdisk /mbr. This will recreated your boot sector on the hdd. If you still want to Fdisk the hdd you'll type Fdisk and then you will be presented with menu. After Fdisk do the format but only after you rebooted. I recommend booting from the Win98SE CD-Rom since it's faster and guaranteed compatibility. But if you cannot do this you can always make a boot disk from the Control Panel. Either or will do. But with the Fdisk /mbr command you will not see anything. It works behind close doors. So go ahead and Fdisk the HDD, reboot with the Win98SE CD in the drive (make sure your first boot device in the bios is the cdrom) and then at the prompt type setup. Hopefully this will fix it.
