Problem with video playback

When I try to play MPEG files in Windows Media Player I get the following message:
Windows Media Player cannot open the following file. The player might not support the file type or the codec that was used to compress the file.

A few weeks ago I was able to play every video type normally, but now i keep getting this error. I tried opening in realplayer, quicktime and got the same error. I can open the file in PowerDVD or Windows Media Player Classic, but it was distorted into rectangles with green rectangles over it aswell, basically unwatchable. I also tried opening in DvX but it wasnt supported.

I tried downloading Codec packs, like K-lite, but they didnt make a differance. I also used differant Forceware drivers for my 6800GT, 77.72 and 77.77, no help. I tried messing with the Nvidia Color options but no differance. I really dont know what to do now...
Any help would be grateful.

Help me help you.

Run GSpot with your video file. If it's an MPEG file, it won't give much information, but what I want you to do is click "Render". What that will do is attempt to run the file and see what codecs/filters your computer defaults to for running that type of file. And then tell me what it says.

My guess is your MPEG codecs might be corrupted, and those you normally don't download in a codec pack.

If it says it cannot render the file, tell me about that too.

Also, it might be useful to tell me the file extension, but tell me after you run GSpot.

Ok something weird just happened, because the original file i deleted earlier, i downloaded it again for running gspot, and just after running gspot i opened it in realplayer and it ran fine? I thought maybe the website was dodgy but it happens with downloads from all around the place, I restarted my computer few times and pklayed Bf2 earlier, could the restart of fixed something?

edit ; im gonna download some random video files anjd see the results

Ok I got a file that didnt work last time ( i knowe this for sure) but works now perfectly, could running gspot reactivated my MPEG codecs or brought them to life?

I really doubt that GSpot had anything to do with it.

If you recently installed codecs, and didn't restart, that could have an effect on video playback, as the codecs aren't correctly loaded into the registry and such. Restarting is probably what fixed it.

Anyways, no matter what the problem was, at least its fixed now eh?

Just know for the future, don't go installing a million codecs, that could potentially mess things up along the way, and create conflicts. ;)

Well, when you used GSpot on your files, in the Rendering windows, it should say what codecs are being used. Can you tell me what it says?

For example, when I play an MPEG2 file (for DVD) it says:

Video Path: (S) --> MainConcept MPEG Splitter --> MainConcept MPEG Video Decoder --> (R)
Audio Path:

(That clip has no audio)

I done it on the .mpg that didnt want to run no matter how many times I re downloaded and it said rendering failed. Also in the stat box it says Not a valid AVI file.

It will always say "Not a valid AVI" for MPEG files, that's normal.

Only thing I'm pointing to is the very bottom rendering portion, which still works fine for MPEG files.

Can you give me a link to this MPEG file?
