Hello all,
My father has been experiencing some problems with Windows XP. His computer description is listed in my rigs under "Dell Demnsion." Anyway, he says that sometimes, after extended use of his computer, the primary IDE and/or secondary IDE channels will switch (sometimes one, sometimes both) drives from UDMA (Mode 5 for HDs, Mode 2 for DVD & CDRW) to PIO. Does anyone know why this might be happening/how to fix it?

Most likely because some DMA transfers fail so the IDE driver backs the speed down to PIO mode to prevent data corruption.

I would check all the drivers and once they're up to date and it's still happening, call Dell support.
