problem with Trendnet gigabit switch...but green light indicates it should be working

Hey all,

I have a Netgear wireless N router with 10/100 wired connections that has been working well, but I have a ton of data that I am looking to transfer between my laptop and a Synology NAS that I recently bought. Both my laptop (macbook pro) and the synology NAS (the 411+) support gigabit ethernet, so I bought a well-reviewed but cheap Trendnet gigabit switch.

I just got the switch and plugged in both my laptop and NAS into the switch, and then I plugged the switch into my router. On the front, both the port going to the NAS as well as the port for my macbook are lit up green, indicating that they both are connected at gigabit speeds, while the port going to the router is correctly identified as a 10/100 connection (with an amber light).

However, when I transfer a file from my macbook to the NAS, I am getting only ~550KB/s.

Any ideas?

Unplug and reseat the cables to force it to renegotiate the duplex. While that's going I'd double check the firewall exceptions. If it's still slow manually check the duplex settings to make sure they're all set to full duplex.

what are the transfer speeds when both are connected to the Netgear? i would have to guess a problem with the NAS, not the switch. can you test a transfer between the macbook and another non-NAS device?

If it's still slow manually check the duplex settings to make sure they're all set to full duplex.

No, DO NOT manually set the NIC speed/duplex when connected to an unmanaged switch. this would force the switchport to run at half duplex.

Thanks for the suggestion. As it turns out, it appears to have been the fact that I was going through my NAS' web interface. Once I mounted it as an AFP share drive in Finder, I was able to transfer at about 70MB/s.
