Problem with the CPU temperature!

I just got an Athlon 64 3800 (Socket 939) from my brother and bought an ABIT AT8 32X motherboard for it. But I've got a problem, as soon as I start the computer and check the temperature it says it is 150F and it just keeps rising. I know something is wrong with the reading of 150F because that is just a couple of seconds after starting it.

I felt the heatsink and it does not feel anywhere near as hot as it should for those kind of temperatures. I have checked the voltage settings and they are all normal, as with everything else. My guess is that there is something wrong with the thermometer.

Any help would be very appreciated!

Any thermal paste? Is the heatsink properly attached? What is reporting the temperature, the BIOS?

A better question is: Does the system work or does it shut down? Is it stable? Or have you not let it stay on long enough?

Yes there is thermal paste, yes the heatsink is properly attached and the BIOS is what is reporting the temperature, I do not know what my brand my heatsink is because I got it from my brother. There is definitely a lot of thermal paste, and as for the computer it, does shut off after about a 1/2 hour of running, but I think that because the BIOS is getting to high of a temperature reading because the sensor is bad.

Ok, you say there is a lot of thermal paste? Maybe too much? Try removing the paste and putting on the correct amount. BTW, what type of paste are you using?

When I say a lot I don't really mean a LOT, I just mean there is enough. Before this all happened I installed the original heatsink that came with CPU which had never been used before so it had all it's original paste from AMD, but then I thought maybe it was to small so I installed the other one my brother gave me which is bigger but it did not help.

The Paste I am using is from Radio Shack, But I know it works because I have been using it on many other processors with no problems at all.
