Problem with the BFG 7800 GTX

I'm running into a problem with the BFG 7800 GTX, every once in a while during bootup, the screen is all garbled up with multicolored lines and such.

Windows still boots up all the way but the screen is all messed up, resetting the computer fixes the problem.

Motherboard = EPoX 9NPA+ ULTRA
LCD = Dell 2405FPW

Nope, my computer is just at it's stock speed (3000+ Venice)..

The weird thing is, WINDOWS boots all the way up just fine and i'm able to remote desktop to it - the screen is just all messed up. (note, even the bios screen too during bootup)..

I'll restart and post the BIOS.

The BIOS is 5.70.02.11.25

I called up BFG, and they want me to take it to best buy so their techs can plug it into their computers and see if it has the same problem from time to time - I'm not gonna let those guys touch it..

I'll return it and try an EVGA.

eVGA is the way to go. 🙂 Just make sure to remember to register it so you get 2 years of warranty instead of one. The chances are that you'll sell the card in two years or so, so even though they don't have a lifetime warranty it's still nice. Not to mention their support is amazing.

Doesn't Nvidia make all the cards and send them to the individual vid card companies? So going to another brand wouldn't make sense. I would just RMA it and try a new one.

Also, make sure you have the power plug inserted all the way onto the vid card.

Nvidia holds the reins very tightly on their newer chips, boards from all companies are very similar. The differences come out in customer service, warranty, etc.

In my opinion, that's a little rediculous. What are they going to do? Steal it? Even if they did, it's not like there isn't anything you could do about. I mean I understand it's a $620 videocard, but still.

How is that ridiculous? how will they be able to figure out a problem that only happens intermittently? Out of of the past few weeks that I've owned this card - it's only happened 3-4 times.

Ha sounds kinda like what happened to my dad's old 17" IBM CRT (I think a P70). one day all of a sudden the screen had gained a yellow tint and would have horrible color discolorations, just like yours, after about 1 min of use. We took it to a friend who repairs CRT comp and tv screens and fixed it for like $10. Dont remember what was wrong but it fixed it.

Don't get an eVGA. That is stupid. Give up a lifetime warranty for 2 years? C'mon

Don't bring it in to BBY. Tell BFG you need to RMA it. They'll take care of you. I had a similar problem happen with my BFG 6800GT, but the screen garbled (looked like fuzzy plaid colors) and stayed that way. Didn't try RDP-ing tho

I don't really care about the warranty much, something new will be out in two years that I"ll probably buy.

I've already installed the EVGA, and will report in a few weeks to see if it runs into the same issue. Probably just got a bad card..

Picked EVGA because people say they also have good tech support.

Can you take a pic of the screen next time it happens? I had something similar happen to me when I first got my GTX.

I had just finished doing a clean install and had just updated Windows XP with all the latest critical updates. When I rebooted my screen was all garbled up (colored boxes). I went into the BIOS and it went away. It hasn't happened since. I thinks it's been a couple weeks. I assumed it had something to do with all the updates I just did. Anyway, if it doesn't happen again then I'm not going to worry. Also, I have the Antec TP-II 550. My 12V rail is at 11.88V.

Sorry but the BFG is gone, it basically had a messed up garbled screen will all kinds of stuff.

Even when it booted windows, it was all garbled (Windows worked just fine though, and you can remote desktop to it)..

After a soft reset, it would fix itself - sounds like the same issue you are having.

Who cares about the lifetime warrenty, thats gone if you mod card or bios anyhow, he prob wont want the card after 2 years anyhow when most warrentys run out, ive read lots of BFG problems here on the 6000 range.

Let him get what he wants, BFG aint the "be all and end all" esp outside USA their little heard of.

Get a nice Asian card they are good look at mobos makers like Asus, Abit and DFI.

hmmm, how does on test for a failing 5v rail? I have about a month old Antec Smart Power 2.0 500W..

If you have a digital volt meter, just test it at a molex connector.
