I have a Motorola Surfboard 4200 cable modem. Recently the activity light quit flashing and I in turn quit receiveing an internet connection. I was connected through an ethernet connection. I tried on two different computers. Both machines informed me that the network cable was unplugged. Before I gave up, I tried to hook up via the USB connection. This worked fine. The problem is that I cannot connect through an ethernet connection and cannot use a router. I just bought a linksys router that I was hoping to use but I ran into these problems prior to hooking it up. Any ideas? I'm about to return the cable modem.

Thanks in advance.

I hope for your sake that the Linksys isn't the BEFSR41...
As it has an incompatability problem with the Motorola SB 4200 and 4220.
I'd hate to see you solve one problem only to bump into another.

Motorola has informed me that they are working on a firmware solution
with Linksys. But for now, a 10base hub tossed in between the Cable Modem
and the WAN port is the only solution...

Good Luck

Connectivity isnt the Linksys/Sb4200, only a thruput slowdown due to the 10mb WAN port on the Befsr41 and the firware for the modem has been out for a while now!

Did you say that there is a firmware update to solve the Linksys/Motorola problem?
If so, I would love to know it. I just received this e-mail form Motorola:

Thank you for your inquiry.

We have some customers who are experiencing problems connecting the
SB4200/SB4220 to a cable/broadband router?s WAN or Internet port. At this
time our engineers are investigating the problem. In the meantime you may
contact your router manufacturer to see if there are any firmware
upgrades/downgrades that may help with this problem. We apologize for any
inconvenience this may cause and hope to have a solution to this problem
shortly.

Sincerely,
The Motorola Cable Modem Team
1-877-466-8646

Let me know if you know of a solution.. please. Or maybe I misunderstood your post.
Thanks

YUp, it has been out for a while, but it isn't a user type thing. The ISp (mine does anyway, OPtimum Online) pushes it out automatically, or u can request the upgrade on the OOl forum at dslreports.com. Their is a very nice OOl engineer on there who helps a lot of people out.
