Problem with start up

I am having a problem with my computer during start up. Right after the Win XP loading screen finishes and before the log on screen, it looks like my computer goes into standby. The lights on my keyboard and mouse turn off, then my monitor shuts off. Sometimes it takes just a second and everything is back on and at the log on screen. Other times, it takes as much as 10 seconds for it to go.

I have no idea what is wrong with my computer. I suspect that this problem is apart of a whole series of problems that started at once. The Win XP loading screen takes about 3 or 4 times longer than it used to. When my computer is up and running, it has a very sluggish feeling to it. Like I said, these problems just all appeared at once about a month ago. Since then I've been trying all sorts of virus and spyware scanners, but nothing has changed. I've also defragmented and done check disk. If nobody here has any ideas, I will reformat.

Thanks for your help.

I repair computers for a living and this sounds like a spyware problem. 75% of my service calls are %#$@ing spyware now.

A simple scan with Adaware just doesn't cut it anymore (nor do I trust Adaware or Spybot anymore). Plus neither of these programs checks for BHO objects which is the most common method spyware uses to re-infect you.

Please refer to my detailed spyware removal instructions here: http://theflyingpenguin.com/spyware-removal.shtml

Afterwards I would also recommend you run a FULL virus scan in SAFE MODE.

Hope this helps...

Thanks for the advise FlyingPenguin. I will go through your guide when I get home from work tonight and let you know what happens. I have done a couple full virus scans in safe mode, but I'll try it again.

Well I did everything your guide said, then did a virus scan in safe mode. Nothing came up. Any other ideas?

try TuneXP..it's mentioned in another thread, it helped out with my problem which was a painfully slow loading taskbar

Try to run the system file checker and see if there is a corrupted file... Only problem with this utility is that it wants to update off of the windows cd if you have service pack 2 and you have an original or service pack 1 version of the disc it will update with the older file... if you know how to extract a file from a cab file you can extract it and replace the bad file or you can look up how to make a service pack 2 cd using the slipstreaming method. I would suggest this even if you decide to reimage. it will save you time.

Hope that helps
