Problem with sounds in 98Se

I have windows 98 SE. A few days ago, i tried to install a MD USB link. It asked me for the windows cd, but I couldn't find it. so i had it copy the files from the hd or just skipped some. Now when I load up winamp, windows media player and press play, the application freezes. In games, it freezes also. I had my friend who lives far away from me send me the driver files that I needed. I went into safe mode and deleted the link and my sound card drivers and started from scratch. But now the same thing happens. Is there a way to fix this without reformatting? since I still can't find my windows cd.
