When playing Mp3's in background I have background noise (sounds like clicking) when I type, move the optical mouse, scrolling, etc.
I also have sound problems in some games, mainly Unreal and Unreal Tournament as well as some problems in Deus X.

I was having problems with an earlier sound card in an ISA slot, but not to the extent I have now.

Sys. specs:

800 Duron
Transcend MB
256 Megs ram pc133
Geforce3mx 400 vid card
40 gig Maxtor hd 7200 rpm dma enabled
win 98se
cable modem
nic card

Try enabling memory hole in bios ( if ya have that option )
It's a documented issue with many SB cards and it often helps.
Good luck

I fixed my problem. purchased a Philips Rythmic Edge sound card.
BTW Soundblasters don't seem to have problems with Intel MBs that don't have via chipsets.
