Problem with sound, help!

i have a pretty big problem on my hands, when i listen to mp3's, play games, like counter-strike, or even listen to cd's, the sound is all distorted and sounds wierd.
I just installed win98, after getting rid of win2k, and then this started.win2k had no problems with it. it's built into my amptron k7-m807 mobo.
any ideas?

have you got any old soundcards laying around, even a crappy one? try putting one in temporarily and see if the sound is any better, that way you can narrow down if it's specific to your boards' sound or something going on with the operating system...

no, no old sound cards, i did however install so alternate drivers someone gave me, it fixed music, but games still sound bad, when i shoot weapons. there is a delay from when i click, and when i hear the sound .its not slow, im running a steady 50 fps in counter-strike, maybe badly assigned irq addresses?
