Problem with Sony CD-RW and Windows XP

I'm running a legit copy of Windows XP, with all the updates and so forth. It's running fine, I have no conflicts except glitches with Kazaa that have no relation to my problem.

Anyways, my brand spanking new computer sports a Sony 24x10x40 burner, model CRX175E which refuses to do anything other than play CD's like a regular drive. I've tried the Roxio Easy CD Creator 5 that came with the package, Nero, and Windows XP's built in support (also by Roxio), all with no luck.

My suspicion is that the problem arises from WinXP support: the Easy CD Creator disc came with a floppy patch, which has my burner's model number on it. This specifically taylored patch doesn't help however, as WinXP chokes on the software without the WinXP patch. I grabbed that, ran it and it installed fine, but my burner still isn't recognized.

So in summary:

- My writer is likely physically fine, I've played music CD's without issue
- Nero will start, then give me all kinds of SCSI errors, although my computer is all IDE
- Adaptec won't even recognize my drive as a valid writer

Any and all help would be appreciated!

I guess the first place to start is to make sure you have updated all software, if you look at Roxio's website under supported drives, yours isn't listed, which means you should download latest version, ecdc_v502d_up.exe, same with NERO, you should be runnin version 5.5.4.5 or above if not download latest patch or patches.

try Nero 5.5.7.2 ... also, try burning in Nero at 8X , 12X or 16X ...

Edit: I must have been on drugs. This doesn't suit your problem at all. Sorry bout that ;-)

I've updated both Adaptec Easy CD Creator and Nero to the latest versions, but they both still refuse to work...Easy CD Creator also came with a specific CRX175E driver floppy, but it doesn't make any difference.

Nero just gives me piles of SCSI related errors, though I'm running a pure IDE machine.

Now the error I get with Adaptec is that:

[*]The disc in the drive is write protected (it's a blank CD-RW, which a friend has used, so I know it works)
[*]Flush has been called, ineffectively
[*]Failure to flush has screwed up transfer

Anyone else with ideas? I've tried everything I can think of, so far no go :(

I've also been looking for Sony CD Extreme, another burning program that I had hoped would support my burner, but it's nowhere to be found...anyone have information on this, or other helpful ideas?

Have tried the burner patch off MS website..there were problems with certain burners...if that fails uninstall all the burning software in the order you installed(reboot each time)..it makes as Nero can cause problems...I had a problem where my burner was not seen I uninstalled Nero and WinOnCD and rebooted and boom no burner seen I had a devil of time getting it sorted out..turned out by uninstalling both programs at the same time with no reboot between ..I screwed something...

If all else fails reformat WinXP..big pain but this should work...reinstall winxp and then install the burning progs one at a time and reboot between installs...

nealh, would you be referring to this?

Windows XP Patch: CDs Recorded in Windows XP Have Missing Files or Errors

Microsoft has released a patch that will prevent some errors from occurring when you copy files or folders to a compact disc-recordable (CD-R) or a compact disc-rewritable (CD-RW). Errors may include inconsistent disc recording and only being able to read the disc its entirety using Windows XP. Download now to prevent disc recording errors from occurring.

It doesn't seem to do the trick, unless there's another patch? I'll give uninstalling/reinstalling a try, hopefully that will resolve it.

I believe my problem is that the Sony CRX175E is too new: Roxio does NOT support the burner by default. My floppy with specific drivers can't be used on top of/with WinXP patch, maybe it would work on an older OS?

I don't know if this applies or helps but I had 2 Sony CDRW's that were extremely picky about what media they would burn too. Sony and Fuji were they only 2 brands I found that would work reliably, all the others I tried wouldn't work. I?d get errors along the lines of unrecognizable media, unformatted media, or it just wouldn?t even find the blank disk. It would read CD?s, (even data and music that were burned on cheap media) it just refused to write to the cheap stuff

Slapstick, that may be it: I get all kinds of bizarre SCSI read errors (my computer is pure IDE) and also media related error messages...I will definitely get a Sony or Fuji CD-RW and give that a try!

Hmm, don't know how the blank message above happened...

Well, here I am again. My situation now:

- All tests are successful, but CD's being churned out after real burning become complete garbage, including Sony brand blanks
- The actual burning process itself works fine, it even informs me that the disc has recorded successfully
- The end result is a disc that isn't recognized as playable, shows up with all disc space free, but cannot be recorded on again...

All of this is using Roxio's Easy CD Creator 5, I haven't ventured to try Nero after losing 2 discs already...

Any help would be appreciated!
