I had an Ubuntu box with a Samba share on it. The share contained a bunch of patches, apps, etc we frequently use where I work. I transferred the entire share to a folder on my G5 (running Leopard 10.5.6) and shared it via SMB. I can view all of the data in the share. I can add data to the share. I can delete data from the share. I can copy any of the data that was transferred from the Linux box to my Windows clients without issue. The problem is if I download a file on my Vista system, transfer it to my OS X share, and attempt to grab it from a Windows client (even the Vista system that put it there). When I try that I get an 'Invalid File Handle' error. So far I've tried .exe, .pdf, and .rar files and all respond the same way.
I did some searching and while I didn't find much to explain it I did see something about a new OS X feature called File Quarantine. Is that what I'm experiencing and if so is there a simple workaround to make this share do what I want (act as a repository that requires username/password)?
Edit: Here's a post on another forum discussing what I'm talking about... Explaining Leopard's Quarantine issues for Windows, Apple Quarantine Breaks Samba
