i am having trouble with slow opening windows in winxp, when i click on shortcut or link in program window to open something it takes over 30 seconds to open. this does not happen all the time and once i click something to open it, it loads fast after that if i close it and reopen. i have a 900TBIRD and 512 meg memory so i am sure that is not the problem. this started happening just recently and has me baffled, i have run check disk and run diskeeper but the problem is still there. this is with nothing else open too. hopefully somebody has experienced this and knows how to fix it other than clean install. thanx in advance

I hada similiar problem with winME recently. Basically it went into '486 mode' and acted really really slow. It turned out my defective mobo was running slow while having an internet connection. I got a new mobo, installed 2k and the problem went away. I would first recommend trying to disable all visual effects in XP. If that doesn't work try unplugging your internet connection and restarting, and see if this helps. BTW i have no idea why removing an internet connection would speed up my system, but it did.
