Problem with setting up a new computer

The system beeps short once. Post screen appears, prompting DEL for setup or TAB for (continuing with) post. But it doesn't repond to DEL or TAB. Swapped keyboard with a working unit. Still the same.

When the system starts, 3 keyboard lights come on briefly. But NumLock light does not come on, or cannot be turned on by pressing NumLock.

Onboard LEDs indicate no error.

AMD64 3000
Biostar TForce 6200 (built-in graphic)
Kingston PC3200 and PC2700.

Thanks.

I don't know what you mean by resetting bios? Do you mean clear CMOS and reset it? I will try that.

KB is PS2. I didn't know there is USB kb. I have a PS2 to USB converter for mouse. Can I use it on KB?
Thanks.

EDIT: Cleared CMOS and restarted. Same problem.

Please advise me if I can use the PS2/USB converter for mouse on the KB. I am suspicisous of the KB port of the mobo. Thanks.

Post a full spec list of your hardware, that may help here. You're aware that the keyboard goes in the purple-colored port on the mobo, not the green one, right?

AMD 64 3000 with stock cooler
Biostar TForce 6100 mobo
Kingston ValueRam, PC2700 and PC 3200, 512 each, individually, not together
IBM 40GB IDE hard disk
Samsung 16x DVD writer
Generic Keyboard (tried 2 different units)
Microsoft wireless USB mouse (also tried PS2 mouse)
Enlight 420W power supply, 20 pins (not 24) power connector, 4 pin cpu connector
Viewsonic 21" CRT monitor (also tried LCD monitor)
No graphics card
No PCI card

That's about it. What confuses me is that the 3 lights of KB come on during post.
Thanks.

PS: Yeah, I know green versus purple.

PS: The bare minimum configuration, that is, motherboard, memory, monitor, KB and mouse gives the same problem.

It beeps once. Onboard LED's indicate no error (specifically, MOBO okay, memory ok, CPU ok, according to manual). Screen reads: <DEL> for SETUP, <TAB> for POST. Apparently, it is waiting for a keystroke. That's as far as I can go.

Thanks.

If you haven't done this yet, next try it with the drives disconnected from power & data cables, as a fact-finding step.

Also, what happens if no keyboard is connected whatsoever, does it get further?

Thank you, thank you, thank you. I thought I disconnected hard disk and DVD writer. But I just disconnected the power, leaving data cable still connected. One by one, I started to add. Now it is running! Thanks for the remote trouble shooting, and you were darn right!

sweet 😎 Does the motherboard seem decent? I've got a leftover 939-pin 3000+ and don't know what I want to do with it yet.

I can't tell because I have no other 939 board to compare to. It boots to x5 and 1GH as far as CPU is concerned, though CPU is correctly recognized as AMD 64 3000. When I change multiplier in the Overclock Utility Panel , it crashes. I guess it changes everything. I will have to manually change it in bios I suppose.
