problem with serious sam II and 7600gt

recently purchased a 7600gt EVGA KO model for my system and bought the game serious sam II. The card is absolutely phenominal for the price point and I only have issues with this one game.

when I run it at 1024x768 with no AA and settings on high (not maximum) it lags very badly.

almost to the point where it is unplayable. It has the latest updates and I am using directx 9.0c with the newest nvidia drivers. Pc is a 3.0ghz p4 with 1gb of ram.

anyone have an idea what would cause this? I played HL2 last night and it ran like a dream with the same settings. I thought SSII wasnt as graphic intensive as HL2.
