Hi,

I've been having a problem with my Samsung CD/DVD drive recently.

The problem manifests itself in the following ways:

1. When reading an audio CD using Winamp 5.09: The system usually reboots when a new song is just starting up. Occasionally, it reboots in the middle of a song. I can read the CD just fine using Windows Media Player 9.

2. When reading a DVD: I've been trying to install Visual Studio 2005 Beta 2 from the MS DVD. The install never completes as the system reboots, not at mandated times, but at seemingly random times... when the install is 15%, 40% or around 85% done.

The system temperature is not exceeding the safe limits and neither is the power supply inadequate (going by specs).

Could somebody please give me some pointers as to what could be wrong?

It sounds like you have 'automatic restart on system failure' enabled.

First of all, you need to disable this so that you can see the error message given when your system crashes.
Start -> Control Panel -> System -> Advanced -> Startup and Recovery (Settings)
Uncheck the 'Automatically restart' box, and then let us know what the error is next time this happens.

What make/model is your PSU? And what motherboard/RAM are you using? Tell us as much information as you can. In my experience, Windows XP crashes are almost always caused by bad hardware or bad drivers. Crashes while copying from a CD/DVD could be a poor PSU or faulty RAM.

Is this a custom built PC or something from Dell or some other OEM manufacturer?
