Problem with RAM???

Building my own gaming rig. Having MAJOR problems installing OS Windows XP SP2.
Wel actually, it wont install on HDD...ANY HDD. Tried several. Thought it was Mobo problem, so I changed it as well. Thought the problem was CDR...so changed it too. OS still not installing. Then I remembered I tried to save money on the 512 RAM by buying it on ebay 🙁
Could RAM effect install of OS? What DIMM should it go into #1 or #3. Could something in BIOS be wrong (set to "Fail Safe defaults now)

Specs:

ABIT NF7-s2
AMD Athlon XP 3200 CPU
Maxtor 80 Gig HDD 7200 EIDE
512 cheap RAM memory
PNY GeForce 6800 GT
Plextor PX-708A

Any, and ALL help is greatly appreciated in advance...Thankx!!!🙂

It certainly could be the ram. What part of the installation is failing? Are you getting a blue screen? Are you sure the XP disc is good?

DIMM1 should be fine for 1 stick of RAM.

Loading of files fails on SEVERAL files, I get "Windows cannot copy the file___" Sometimes I make it to the setup, and it will go all the way to the end and then I get a blue screen "A problem had been detected, and Windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer...", then it dumps memory. The XP disk, although OEM, is new.

HI CDC Mail Guy and Welcome to the Forums!

If I had one stick, I'd put it in slot #3. I think you'll find that the manual says start there when installing ram.

Run Memtest86 overnight on the stick. You don't need the OS installed to run this free proggie.

If you get any errors, consider the stick bad. You could also try manually changing/loosening the timings. Go into BIOS, "Advanced Chipset Features". Select "expert" for the ram's timings so you can change them.

How do I run Memtest86? I have never heard of it...Thank's to all for your help so far, much appreciated. I think it's the RAM, but want to try the test as soon as I find out how.
