Problem with Radeon 9800 Pro and Direct3d

Hey all-

I'm new to these forums. I've tried multiple fixes for this problem and none of my friends can help (and ATi isn't doing so hot either with their generic responses) so here I go.

I have a new system consisting of:
Giga-Byte mobo (I can find the specifications later.)
AMD Athlon 3000 XP, not overclocked, running at ~2.2 GHz
Radeon 9800 Pro not overclocked
512 MB DDR400+ RAM 3200
Western Digital 80 Gig HDD (I have another 80 Gig I plan to add on later, but first the computer has to work =P)
Tower has a fan on the power supply and a fan on the front of the case; I leave the side open when actually using the computer for games. Other then that, there is a fan on the video card and the processor (duh.)

Anyways, I bought these components over a month ago, assembled my compy, and then had to leave on a trip to visit my folks. Then I had to wait for some new RAM to come in, so really I didn't get to try it out with games like Farcry until just last Monday.

About 20 minutes into playing Farcry (fiddling with graphics settings along the way; turning AA on and off and high and low and changing resolutions) all of a sudden I entered a jungle area and bam, glitching all over the place. I restarted the level; started a new game, etc. etc. The glitching just seemed to get worse.

So I changed drivers, used driver cleaning programs; made sure I had the latest Catalysts, and also reinstalled directx. I've even done a clean install of my Windows XP-based system and rebuilt everything from the ground up. I've checked the connections and everything.

And still the system shows this graphical glitching-I've gone to dxdiag to test stuff out, because every other factor of my computer is doing alright. DirectDraw works fine; Direct3d 7 works fine. But the tests for Direct3d 8 and 9 reveal a spinning cube with jagged, jutting edges and warped rendering. This happens in any game using direct3d, and it also tends to create general video/system instability.

Like, my monitor will sometimes cut out for no good reason. The computer will still be running just fine; no suspend or anything-the monitor will just cut out. Also, some games that don't use direct3d will crash when a particularly graphically intense (comparitively) situation occurs onscreen.

I am considering RMAing my card, except for the fact that the glitching is so much different from what I've seen other people describe. I've been trying to give ATi the benefit of the doubt for over a week now, and though I'm frusterated that my nice system is giving me the proverbial finger, I want to make absolutely certain its a video card problem before I attempt to get ATi to repair/replace it.

I am just thinking that somehow it overheated while I was playing Farcry. If so, I'm a little concerned about the temperature of whatever future cards I get...either that or this particular Radeon 9800 Pro I have has a faulty heatsink and such.

Anyways, help would be appreciated.

What is your AGP Aperature/speed? If your speed is 8x, try turning it down to 4x. Did you make sure all your Mobo drivers are installed? Other than that, yeah, maybe want to RMA it...

Do any of your friends have an ATI card you can drop in your machine and test? That's prolly the easiest/best way to tell.

Good Luck with it
