PROBLEM with quake 4

hi, everyone

i've got a major issue here

i've got random lockups in quake 4, even in the menu!
when it freezes...i can hear a distinct sharp *weeeeeeeee* sound coming from my speakers

however, i got no problem playing any other games (including far cry, fear, lost coast, nfs:most wanted...)

i tried switching drivers, tried to leave the clock at stock speed, updating my sound card driver...

help!!!
