Problem with Q6600 and CPU Fan

Hey, I just got a Q6600 with an ARCTIC COOLING Freezer 7 Pro 92mm cooler and am planning to OC it to 3.0 Ghz (I'm new to OC'ing, but I have heard that my motherboard and this processor are good for it (GB GA-P35-DS3L)). I based these choices on the fact that I don't want to upgrade for at least three years.

Anyway, CoreTemp says my CPU is only running @ 1866.67 Mhz (266.67 x 7.0), when it should be running at 2400.00 Mhz (266.67 x 9.0). Also, my CPU fan seems to only be running @ around 450 RPM when the cooler states it should be running between 900-2000 RPM. Obviously I am not even going to attempt to overclock my system before both of these issues are fixed, so any advice would be appreciated. If you need anymore information I will be happy to provide it.

I am also running 4GB Ram DDR2 800 @ 5-5-5-12 and have a 8800 GT 512MB with a 600W PSU (specifically this one). TYIA for any tips and advice.

And just so you know, everything seems to be running OK, I haven't had any stability issues or problems for the last week or so its been running and my XP system is completely up to date along with all of my drivers.

Could be a coretemp bug. What does CPUZ say? You might also wanna try out HWMonitor for your fan RPM reader which is on the same page as CPUZ.

When you are ready to overclock the machine, have a read through my overclocking guide if you haven't done so already. If nothing else you will want to minimize your vcore for your stock 9x266 setting since the lower the vcore, the lower your load temps.

The core speed keeps bouncing back in CPUZ between 1600 and 1866, and the HWMonitor says the fan speed is also around 475 RPM....

I just checked on my dads computer who has the same processor and cpu fan as I do but with a different PSU (500W instead of 600W) and everything seems to be running fine, 2400 9x266, FAN speed of >2000 RPM and a core temp 25 C lower than mine.

This seems like a PSU issue to me...the computer works, persay, but clearly something is wrong, and I don't know how to find out what it is or fix it at this point. And yes, I will be checking out your OC guide, thanks :D.

The bouncing between 1600 and 1866 is caused by Intel's power saving features. When not in heavy use, the CPU multiplier is automatically lowered to 6, giving you the 1600MHz speed. I'm not sure why your multiplier seems to be stuck at 7 though. You could try looking in the BIOS and double check that it is in fact set for a multiplier of 9.

Aight, I will give that a shot...although this doesn't explain why the CPU fan seems to be stuck @ 475 RPMs when it should be pushing 2000. I am going to try a few things a get back to you.

An Update...I checked the bios, and it WAS limited to 7 (no idea why), so that problem was fixed easily. For the fan, I simply disabled FAN Warning and Smart Auto Fan or whatever it is called, now it is running at over 2600 RPM, which is a little over the high end spec of 2500 RPM, so all seems right in the world (hopefully).

Weird. Thanks for all the help guys! Even if I was just being stupid...happens :)

I have the same CPU and Mboard and issues with my fan as well. Problem is on boot up though. The fan doesn't want to get started. Once I reboot. It slowly starts up and gets up to decent speeds. I also have the fan warning on, and the Smart Auto Fan dealeo. Thing is. I can reboot my pc over and over again and not have the problem. It only occurs when it has been like 8+ hours or so since the last time I booted it up. Could my house temp being 60 degrees while I am at work effect this? Will do some checks and get back.
