I have a Powercolor Radeon 7000 video card which I am using on a MSI MS-6341 motherboard. I have all the latest software installed for the motherboard & AGP. Also, I am using a fairly old Dell monitor model D825HT ultrascan 800HS series.

After I have updated the video drivers to the latest version (5.9) from the ATI site & if I put the settings on anything greater than 800x600 and 256 colors, the next time I do a hard shutdown and then restart the computer, when the video gets up to the point just before loading the desktop, it goes blank and stays blank (no video). The operating system is operational, because I can use the keyboard to perform a shutdown.

Is this problem of not being able to use any resolution greater than what I stated above, being caused by a flaw in the video card or is it somehow related to the inability of the old Dell monitor to display at this resolution ?

Any thoughts welcome.

Thanks.

It looks like the problem is with the Dell monitor. I got another monitor (a Samsung 19") close enough to the computer to try it and it works on the Samsung at 1024x768 - 16bit.

Is there any update to the Dell monitor INF file that I can get to cure this problem ? I have gone to the Dell site and I can't seem to find one.

Thanks.

did you load the ATi Catlyst Control Panel driver? If you check display advanced properties, do all the ATI tabs show up?

No, I did not install the ATI control panel but I can see all of the tabs in the windows based control panel just fine. I believe the problem is related to the old Dell monitor I am using, please see my previous post.

Is it necessary to install the ATI control panel for this to function correctly. I also thought that those were optional ?

Thanks.

I found out that the problem was with the old Dell monitor.

It will not display when set to more that 256 colors.

The video card works fine on new monitors.
