Problem with Pioneer Slot-Load 32X SCSI CDROM - PLEASE help me on XMas Day!

Having a problem with this CD-ROM, wondering if any of you could help me out. It's running on a 50-pin port on my Adaptec 2940U2W SCSI adapter card. Also running Win2000, SP2. Never had a problem with this setup before, but for some reason, the CD-ROM won't read. I don't think the loading mechanism is broken as it accepts the CD fine, but it starts to spin and the LED blinks a bit. Doesn't read the CD though, and it seems as if the system stalls until I eject the CD. I've reinstalled drivers and all the software perspectives but can't seem to figure it out. It has performed flawlessly for almost 2 years, is it possible that the optical reader is damaged?

TIA.

P.S. Merry Christmas Everyone!

BTW, I have this CD-ROM vertically mounted. I was under the impression that the position of the CD-ROM didn't matter, as long as it was either upright, or perpendicular, not slightly angular. I have seen many other OEM systems that use vertically mounted CD-ROMs and harddrives, so is this even an issue?

well if u do it vert. u have to use the internal clips. nevertheless, it has worked before.. does hte drive emit any weird sounds like churning or anything? can it read the disc at all? ie, disc size, type, does windvd recognize it before actually trying to play?

Hmm, I wouldn't need clips because this is a slot-load drive, not a tray. It can't read anything, it spins as normal but won't detect a CD. Really odd I find, because it worked perfectly yesterday morning and afternoon, then all of a sudden it decides to falter on me 🙁.

Oh, one other thing - I'll probably end up replacing this drive with the 16X Pioneer slot-load DVD drive, DR-106S I think. Any experiences with this drive? I know it's a solid drive from what I hear, I'm just curious about how well it reads certain media, as this 32X CD-ROM I have was quite picky.

hrm. not sure about scsi dvd drives. i ran out of money after getting a ultraplex wide and a plex 12x/4 scsi. perhaps u can find another person who owns a scsi dvdrom. i just use mr. ide.

I'd return it & get a toshiba dvd scsi drive.

I had problems w/ a new 305s slot dvd scsi drive.

Diablo2 would not work (because of copy protection). I used the original cd.

And WinDVD wouldn't work either.

When I switched out the drive w/ my toshiba dvd & plextor cdr, both drives worked fine.
