Problem with PC locking up

My setup is
asusA7A266 mobo
amp 1700 xp
512 meg SDram
Maxtor 40 gig 7200 rpm hd
sb audigy sound card
3com nic card
This seems to happen once every 45 minutes or so. It either hangs up for a few seconds or locks up and just freezes. At first i thought it may be my soundcard causing this because it seemed to happen anytime a loud or sudden noise happened in a game. I removed the soundcard and it stil happens. Any suggestion are greatly appreciated.

Is this system new? Have you made any changes recently? Are you overclocking? Have you tried using failsafe BIOS defaults?

Usually random lockups are associated with excess heat or an inadequate power supply. Answer those questions first. Then the forum members can properly diagnose your problem a little better. Welcome to the forums by the way. =)

The system is two weeks old.
I am not overclocking
I have tried the bios defaults
No changes except for removal of the soundcard (sent back for rma)
the case is an enlight case with a 300 watt psu.
